Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is an ancient tradition that Christians have often used to read scripture. It is a way that I have found helps we calm down and rest in the presence of God when I am feeling anxious, overwhelmed, lonely, etc. It works in four parts. First reading a passage of scripture, second meditating on it, third praying to God, and finally resting or contemplating what stood out to you. Some find it helpful to do these four steps 3 or 4 times while sitting with the same passage, but if I have one peace of advice for you, it is to go slow. Don’t rush through the motions. Take some deep breaths and allow yourself to rest in the presence of God.
Example:
Try praying this.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14
Now take a moment and meditate on what you just read.
…
Pray.
…
Rest and contemplate what stood out for you.
…
Now repeat process this again.
Other Passages to try this with:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
“ For I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
